Kudha: sebagai apa sih…?
rini: character animator

 

Kudha: so cerita dunk bagaimana bisa memilih jalan hidup sebagai karakter animator..?
rini: hmmm awalnya sih di indo .. graduated from architecture.. terus lanjut bikin 3d buat architecture purposes.. terus.. dateng kesini .. ceritanya mo belajar 3d.. nyoba nyoba animation …..fell in love with it …..that’s my life now

       
      

Kudha: sebelumnya tak mengira bakal jadi animator…? apa cita2nya jadi arsitek..?
rini: hmm ga juga.. tadinya mo ngambil comp science malah tapi nyasarnya ke architecture.. ga perna kepikiran jadi animator.. tapi in some way.. it’s pretty similar ..
animation required a lot of observation how human think and feel very detail oriented … which i like
it’s interesting to analize how every single movement works … eh mix ama english ga papa ya

       
      

Kudha: ok… understandable ambil diploma dimana…? kanada..?
Rini: nope ambil master degree di academy of art university , san francisco

       
      

Kudha: ooooh master…? kirain diploma abis 3 tahun sih. master in what..? art..? or animation..?
Rini: iya disini master of fine art MFA major animation .. 3 taon sih programnya disini

       
      

Kudha: bagaimana bisa decide….’ah ambil major animation aja’….? i think that very important turning point of yr life rite..?
Rini: yup .. well semester pertama actually masi ga milih.. soalnya mikirnya maybe i should do environment modeling. gara gara background arch.. tapi abis itu .. di maya 1 class. where i did everything from modeling to animation.. the teacher said to me .. " i think you should choose animation" dia ngeliatnya i have a good understanding of timing and weight.
it’s like a bet.. terus abis itu .. ngambil animation class. g rasanya lebi ngerasa fun aja nganimate.. dari pada bikin model
terus ya uda abis dari itu focus di animation .. never regret it

       
      

Kudha: so bakat alami lah
Rini: hmm ga juga .. pas di animation class yang pertama ..
struggle.. sooo bad. heheh dibanding ama anak anak sini yang memang grew up ama disney animation.. i knew nothing about animation.. 0 knowledge
i think it’s the nature that foreign student has to work a lot harder from student that already knew animation since they’re kid.

       
      

Kudha: dari kecil gw jg seneng animasi…. tp tetep aja zero jg. hehehehe
cerita dunk ttg pixar class
Rini: ah that’s the best class that i’ve took so far

       
      

Kudha: its every year..?
Rini: untuk masuk kelas itu .. kita mesti submit demo reel
rasanya ampir semua animation student di sekola nyoba apply
ada 3 level. pixar 1 , 2 and 3
u gotta start from 1 so that’s the hardest to get into

       
      

Kudha: ic …. kirain bagian dari program aja
Rini: i tried 1 year.. so 4 times and failed before got accepted
ga .. itu kaya additional .. 1 kelas 12 orang
so out of hundreds.. cuma di pilih 12 coba.. kacau
abis itu kalo mo masuk ke yang level 2.. mesti submit demoreel lagi

       
      

Kudha: oni for academy of art student…?
Rini: not neccesary.. there’s no unwritten rules .. tapi mostly either academy student.. or alumni
g keterima setelah g graduated
so g kerja fulltime plus ngambil pixar class

       
      

Kudha: wow…
jadi bayarannya beda dgn masternya
is it expensive the pixar class…? compare to animation mentor..?
Rini: nah .. in theory it’s part of the school. so the fee is the same fee as other class
it’s  just not everybody can take it

       
      

Kudha: looo.. berarti harus masuk academy of art dulu dunk
Rini: hmm i don’t really know the rules.. but so far.. even after u graduated u can take it .. and most people that i know who took it has somekind of connection.. either student.. or alumni.. or teacher

       
      

Kudha: ic, jd setelah graduated pixar class submit ke blur dan accepted..?
Rini: nope….pas ngambil pixar class.. g kerja di game company .. stormfront studios. .. worked on eragon for a year
terus abis project kelar.. pindah ke project offset. for 8 months .. abis itu pindah ke blur

       
      

Kudha: so diterima di blur sebelum lulus dari pixar class… wow…
apa si yg diajarin di pixar class…. 3 years ?
Rini: no no no .. g ambil pixar class selama 1 taon level 1 and 2
abis itu reel dari pixar class got me to offset.. and the same reel got me to blur

       
      

Kudha: kadang gw mentok pas animate…. hasil animatenya gitu2 aja….
Rini: brain freeze

       
      

Kudha: its like what else to do…? gw tau treasurenya masiihhh dalem yg harus digali tp mo belajar ma siapa gak jelas… bisa dikasih 1 tips aja gimana biar bisa animate yg semua soul keluar..?
Rini: hehe……waduh kalo itu susah yak .. animation is a very complicated thing.. u can’t stop learning ..
kalo mentok .. usually i took a step back
tinggalin dulu
look at reference… reference is veeryy important..
look at book.. movie..
and back again ..
sometimes.. you have to look at old version of your work.. and see.. what went wrong
if it’s necessary .. went back to blocking pass.. or first pass and start over

       
      

Kudha:  yaaa betul… kadang mending start over…
so what it like to work on blur..?
what projects r u workin on..?
Rini: blur is awesome
what i’m workin on now.. hehe masi belon bisa bilang
belon keluar soalnya.. tapi ini cinematic from game

       
      

Kudha: how many ppl theres on blur…? is it using max and xsi..?
what awesome about blur..?
Rini: i think around 90 ish ……we use both max, xsi, z brush, fusion
hmm work environmentnya very loose
very cool project..

Rini: hahah true
kita ga mesti masuk 9-5
as long as u put 8 hours in a day
and get ur shits done

       
      

Kudha: alot of talented animator there..?
learn alot from them..?
Rini: yup .. coming from games .. it’s a diff animation when u work on cinematic or movie my first supervisor.. his name is leo santos.. he has a great eye for detail
he can spot a pop very quick .. when i have to squiinnttt to see where it is

       
      

Kudha: hei we got elsa santos here… maybe there related… she’s supervisor designer. she work on harry potter
Rini: LOL harry potter movie?

       
      

Kudha: dah brapa lama di blur..? aim to feature studio..?yup the movie
Rini: ah nice ! di blur hmm dari may 6 month ya
hmm feature.. tempted.. heheh tapi i love blur so far.. having many different project on a plate is good..
pernah beberapa dapet kesempatan buat kerja di feature
tapi karna masalah visa.. jadi ga bisa

       
      

Kudha: haaah…? maksudnya…? beda state..?
Rini: ga juga.. feature.. apa lagi vfx company kaya ilm
mereka prefer contract or freelance as a working visa holder..
it’s very risky soalnya kalo abis project.. kita cuma punya waktu 2 weeks to find other job

       
      

Kudha: ooo…bagimana orang indonesia disana…?
diindustri maksudnya…? banyak jg..?
Rini: nah itu g juga pengen tau ada beberapa yang g tau
tapi ga banyak yang ce malah cuma satu yang g tau

       
      

Kudha: ada yg dimajor studio..?
Rini: hmm.. not that i know ada satu di factor 5 animator juga
terus ada yang bikin studio sendiri sih

       
      

Kudha: ooyaaa i heard about that too. masuk dalam ani-mag kalo gak salah
udah mau jam kerja…. ada pesan2 dan tips2 terakhir untuk animator2 indonesia….?
Rini: hmm apa yaa..
ga tau mo pesen apa .. tips juga.. i guess .. just never stop learning.. .. cliche yak
Kudha: any sugesstion dari mana learningnya…? jgn suruh ke pixar class yaa

       
      

Rini: hahha ga juga .. online sekarang uda banyak resource nya..
